Uni started but I feel like I haven't seen anyone yet. (yes yes, Haley, I know what you mean.) Last session was really good. I really enjoyed the movie and I was happy that people enjoyed the movie. I know it was a strange movie but we like that, don't we?
ID cinematheque is still strong after uni started. Although I want to see more support from people but I'm happy with our small group. Well, it's still on Friday, and we are still watching Bertolucci film. I warn you. This film is more f@£$ed up than last one. This is the masterpiece of Bertolucci. (If I can get my hands on the film.) Be prepared before you come and watch this film.

Oh, cinematheque is back again for last session for the holiday!!! (it might continue or not during the semester, depending on things.)
It's on same time same place and I hope more people...
Last session was great watching Jean-Luc Godard's famous "Breathless". I was glad that everyone enjoyed it.
This week, in the spirits of May 1968, Paris, in the spirits of Henri Langlois who created cinematheque and in the spirits of all the creative people... we are watching "The Dreamers" by Bertolucci. I think in the cinema world and any creative art world, May 1968 was an important period of time. Anyway, come and enjoy the film.

Friday afternoon session was great! (although it was me and four other people. Thanks Guy! You made it me and four other people not three. :)) Not many people turned up though. I wasn't expecting large number of people but I didn't see some of the faces I was expecting to see. Anyway, it was good to see everyone.
We watched a film called "Masculin Feminin" by Jean-Luc Godard. I think last time I watched it was 1998. And I was really excited by this film when I first watched it. But I couldn't make much sense of it then. I'm not sure about anybody else but I really enjoyed this film. (I hope I wasn't the only one and hope everyone enjoyed this film.)
I think as long as people are willing to come and sit and watch a film (any films)
I'm willing to do this again next friday. I think the time's the same, 2pm. If any of you wants to make suggestion to improve this in anyway (changing the time or date or films), let me know. Please don't hesitate to suggest films that you want to watch. I'm up for anything.

hmmm... holiday has been really tiring...
It seems I get more energy from going to uni and spend lots of time with friends than spending my precious time, working and doing other things...

I initially thought of organising some kind of broadcasting group within our department but it seems too much of work for some people. So, I have another suggestion that might strengthen our sense of community!

Within next couple of weeks I'd like to run movie nights.
And I'd like to call it, "ID Cinematheque"!!!
The plan is to gather around (in building87) and watch a film (DVD or Video) and after we can talk about it in context of whatever...
If people like this idea, we can make it an on-going thing (I would like it to be.)

If you have a date on mind let me know.
And if you would like to suggest a film let me know as well.

Re-Awakening

well theres not been heaps happening with the DSS, although more people are getting interested and hopefully when the next few events are held there will be a better turn out. currently there are two events that are in the planning process, these are the DSS Film Night and the end of semester pub crawl and i suppose after that there will be the beginning of semester 2 pub crawl and maybe an event mid holidays. There has been talk lately about expanding the DSS to start including other faculties and courses. This is and has always been one of the core aims of the DSS - which is to promote interaction and networking between people. While it would be great to have DSS events including other students, maybe it could become a networking tool for helping students to network with those in industry. I also think it might be time to attempt to set up the DSS as a more official body and get funding and then we can do more things for the community - these are just some ideas that I have been thinking about and i would love other peoples input and ideas on these and also don't hesitate to suggest anything that you think could be a good idea or something that might have even the smallest potential.

Looking ahead

People actually turned up to the DSS Pub Crawl! this is fantastic! although there were a few people that didn't turn up that I thought might have been there...maybe next time. but defiantely many thanks to the people who did turn up to the crawl, i hope you enjoyed yourselves..... anyway maybe we should start thinking about what might come next. I have had a couple of ideas that have been bouncing around in my head.
the main idea was a barbecue in the next few months, maybe running some sort of student team design comp where there must be at least one person from each year level on each team. both of these ideas would of course require union funding or funding from somewhere so in the coming week I plan to get in contact with the union and see what happens with all of that - to start with i know we need at least 15 supporters to get registered as an RMIT union society - so we will se what happens with that.
But if anyone else has any flashes of brilliance on what event or whatever that we could run to encourage more inetraction within the community, post away....

Yep the first organised advent for the DSS was a great success as there was a variety of year levels ranging from 1st to 3rd year and a lecturer… Though the not being a success would have been only Julian and Raph turning up by themselves. I defiantly think that it should be run again sometime. Thanks Raph and Julian for organising it and in true RMIT fashion not sticking to the exact plan of the order of the pubs, (not saying that’s bad just proving it’s an in built RMIT thing of not following :) things…I thinks that our motto.) It was an nice bunch of people who turned up so thanks for coming along.

Finally the pubs have been decided....BE THERE!

Hi Brain and Soumitri
One of the projects that was porposed last year by a group of ID students was to get a Design Students Society(DSS) started this year to help promote more interaction between the different year levels and provide the Industrial Design students with some more social events. To kick start the DSS a Pub Crawl is being organised and the proposed date is for it to be held on the 3rd of March starting at 5pm. We hope to get people from all levels of the ID program to attend, including lecturers and staff - so is there anything already organised eg: first year camp, that might mean we have to change the date of the pub crawl?
Later on when all the deatils are finalised we will be wanting to get the word out to as many within the ID program as possible - would it be possible to have an email sent out via the ID program mailing list?

ok so I have revised the list of pubs/bars and added some of the places suggested by Ben and Kate.

Also I will email brian to check that the 3rd won't pose a problem for getting people on the crawl - make sure there isn't anything on that will interfere. Also I am planning to come in for the working bee and after it I will do a dry run of the crawl to make sure its an alright route, the pubs are still there etc... and also try and arrange some drinks specials for us at various places - if anyone wants to give me a hand with this then come along.

Pubs/Bars List

Ok heres a preliminary list of pubs/bars for the DSS pub crawl. It has been suggested that the date for it should be friday the 3rd of March, if anyone thinks that this date could be an overall problem for the genral ID popultaion - eg: first year camp is on or something then please suggest a different date - it can be easily changed. Anyway the list.....
It has been decided that we will start at the oxford.
so any of these could follow Duke of Kent, Van Gogh Bar - Melbourne Central, Three Degrees bar, Fluid Oz(melbourne International Backpackers) - please suggest more pubs/Bars or of course if you don't agree with of the ones on the preliminary list then say so and we can scratch them.
Has anyone been to any of the pubs on Franklin street ? Maybe one or two of those would be good. Suggestion for Pubs please....sooner the list and date is confirmed the sooner that we can put out flyers and emails about it to the ID program.

oh and can we get a list of supporters/disciple's so that the Student Union can be talked to so we can find out what the deal at that end is.

Right. Its 8.45pm on 31st of of Jan 2006, I'm listening to elton john and its time to get this baby rolling along and try and get the DSS happening. At the end of last year the original plan was infact to get a pub crawl happening for O-week 2006. SO where are we at with this? At the moment it isn't going anywhere so we need to get organised.
1. We need a list of pubs we can go to.
2. We need a date and time for it
3. We need to get the word out to potential people to pub crawl with us. So basically all ID students.
4. We need to get @ least 15 people to support the DSS and then we can talk to The RMIT Student Union about being a registered society.

yeh, firstly, you/we should figure out what we want. maybe run it thru playgroup, but seriously, we probably dont have to be too serious. from the sound of it we can get a gang of 15 together, and apply for a pub crawl, see where it goes from there. so do we have to get 15 signatures on paper or what? maybe we should plan what we want to do now, but only put it into motion a few weeks before next semester. theres no real point in starting a design students society unless uni is on. we might even be able to loook into getting equipment that we could share....
i dunno. playgroupit? whens the next plygroup wamyo.?

well it looks like this project died quite quickly - i have been asked by a few people to send them invites for this blog so i am going to do that in an attempt to rejuvinate this project and to further that i will be bringing this up for disscussion at playgroup on tuesday, this will hopefully shed new perspective and light on the DSS as it is currently known.

The immediate furture

Ok julian so what is happening. What have we got! We need to sort this thing out. I feel we need to
1. decide exactly what the purpose of the DSS is - make up some sort of vision and mission statement so that we know who we are, but mostly so everyone else knows who we are and what we are about.
2. clearly map out the path that we are going to take the DSS down
2. get in contact with other people in the other disciplines
3. start spreading the word about it and get more interest within industrial design
4. make further descisions on the pub crawl
5. discuss with soumitri
6. start to form a committe or whatever for it.
7. decide whether it is the DSS or the DC or the DK or whateva the fuck it's gunna be called
and so on and so forth

I feel that we really need to get a solid base within ID and let everyone in ID know whats going on before we start trying to get to many of the other departments heavily involved. And we need to be careful not to tread on toes - cause remember that the lady at the reception up in building eight said something about a meeting that had been held, or something and it was held every semester or whateva - so if there is already stuff within the other disciples happening we need to try and not piss them off, well at least not this early on.

Union funding

So i had a bit of a look at the RMIT Union website and had a quick squiz about what they had to say on the setting up of clubs and societies:

"How do I start a club?
You’re probably asking yourself at this stage "That sounds plenty impressive, but how do I start a club?" Well, it’s not that hard. All you need are fifteen (15) RMIT students who say that they’re your partners in crime, or worshipable disciples or whatever it is that you’re on about. The Clubs and Societies Officer can fill you in on the other requirements. But it really is that easy. "
